CAM Delivers Glasgow Digital DASPublished: 07 December 2017
Arqiva, one of the world’s leading communications infrastructure companies, together with Dali Wireless Inc, leader in fronthaul innovation for virtual radio access network (RAN) and Cellular Asset Management have completed a project together to improve mobile coverage and capacity in Glasgow City Centre
Working in partnership with Arqiva and Dali Wireless, CAM replaced the analogue components of Glasgow’s analogue Distributed Antenna System with Dali’s digital DAS. The new system will deliver superior performance, supporting 2G, 3G, 4G and future 5G services and is the first digital DAS installation for Dali Wireless in the UK.
Glasgow is a vibrant, bustling city with a population of over 500,000. It also has a large student population of over 50,000 during term time, which all creates huge demand on the City Centre’s communications network. In comparison to traditional DAS, Dali’s digital DAS is able to provide the required performance to accommodate an ever-increasing demand.
The digital DAS system is also completely scalable, meaning it can be used in all kinds of outdoor environments, as well indoor locations such as shopping centres and multi-floor offices. The flexibility of Dali’s solution allows mobile operators to effortlessly update and expand its network in a plug-and-play approach. This eliminates the need for mobile operators to overhaul their existing networks to keep up with future technology like 5G.
The 2G, 3G, and 4G services of multiple mobile operators are delivered to 12 outdoor nodes from a central equipment room using CWDM technology over 5 optical fibre rings. The equipment is positioned in key locations in the city centre including a busy restaurant and a 300 year old clock tower.
“Working with Dali Wireless allowed us to provide a solution where the analogue components were replaced with a state-of-the-art digital DAS system, providing a multi operator solution and improved coverage and capacity for mobile phone users in Glasgow City Centre,” explains Nicolas Ott, Managing Director of Telecoms & M2M at Arqiva.
“We are delighted to have been appointed by Arqiva and Dali Wireless as their integration partner,” comments Ken Ng, Technical Director at Cellular Asset Management. “It was a pleasure to work alongside Dali Wireless in obtaining approval for its Digital DAS platform from the UK mobile network operators, and then to manage the deployment and commissioning of the system in Glasgow. This outdoor DAS has become one of the first fully digital platforms deployed in the UK and the success of the project is a result of the close working relationship between the service provider, vendor and integrator. We are proud to have helped Glasgow achieve first class mobile coverage and capacity with a clear upgrade path to 5G.”
